Bramor the Mossfooted
There are creatures who seek treasure but Bramor has never understood why.
The forest already provides everything worth finding.
Each morning, Bramor climbs the moss-covered stones that rise above the ferns and studies the woods with patient eyes. He knows where the sweetest mushrooms emerge after rain. He knows which berries ripen first beneath the old pines. He knows where the wild onions push through the soil when spring first warms the earth.
One season, a harsh drought settled across the woodland. Streams thinned to trickles. Ferns curled at their edges. Animals wandered farther each day searching for food.
Many grew worried but Bramor was unphased. He did what he always did. He walked.
His moss-soft feet carried him beneath cedar boughs and across forgotten ridges. He searched every hollow, every shaded bank, every place where moisture still lingered. In time, he found a hidden valley sheltered between ancient stones.
There, green life flourished. Mushrooms clustered beneath fallen logs. Tender shoots covered the ground. Small pools gathered clear water from unseen springs.
Bramor returned again and again, carrying what he could. He shared berries with hungry birds. He led rabbits to patches of clover. He left bundles of roots where deer would find them. He carried armfuls of seeds to places where the earth had grown bare. Day after day he worked.
The drought eventually passed. Rain returned. Streams filled once more. New growth spread through the forest.
When the woodland flourished again, many creatures spoke of the hidden valley that had sustained them. Few realized who had gathered its gifts. Fewer still knew how many journeys Bramor had made beneath the summer sun. That suited him perfectly. Recognition had never been his harvest.
As autumn arrived, Bramor climbed his favorite moss-covered stump and looked out across the thriving forest. The berries were plentiful. The mushrooms were healthy. The streams sang once more. He smiled.
Then he set off to search for next season's greens. For Bramor understands a truth older than any treasure: The richest soul in the forest is the one who knows where abundance grows and shares it freely.
